NFL DFS Glossary — Every Term, Defined Once

DFS writing assumes a vocabulary that nobody teaches in one place. This glossary defines every term used across this site — tools and guides — in plain language, with cross-references to where each concept is actually used. Terms you'll meet in every article, forum and podcast, defined the way a patient friend would.

Quick answer: The core dozen: cash game (pays ~half the field, build floor), GPP (pays the top steeply, build ceiling), floor/ceiling (worst/best realistic score), value (pts per $1,000), the 2x rule (cash break-even heuristic), chalk (heavily owned), punt (cheap roster spot), stack (QB + his pass-catchers), bring-back (opponent pass-catcher), FLEX (RB/WR/TE seat), ownership (% of field rostering a player), late swap (editing after kickoff).

Contests and money

TermDefinition
Cash gameContest paying ~half the field about double: 50/50s, double-ups, head-to-heads. Build for floor.
GPPGuaranteed Prize Pool — tournament paying the top ~20% steeply regardless of field size. Build for ceiling.
3-max / single-entryGPP formats capping entries per player, reducing the volume-player edge.
RakeThe platform's cut of the entry fees — why the average player loses by default.
BankrollMoney set aside for entries. The discipline unit of the hobby.
FreerollFree-entry contest with real (small) prizes; where beginners should literally start.

Players and lineups

TermDefinition
FLEXRoster seat fillable by an RB, WR or TE (DraftKings: 1; FanDuel: 2, no DST).
DSTDefense/Special Teams — the team-defense slot in DraftKings NFL formats.
PuntDeliberately cheap player at one slot to fund studs elsewhere; buys ceiling, risks floor.
StackQB rostered with his own pass-catchers so big plays score twice.
Bring-backPass-catcher from the opposing team added to a stack, hedging blowout direction.
ChalkThe obvious, heavily-owned play of the slate.
ContrarianDeliberately low-owned choice, aiming to differentiate in GPPs.

Numbers and math

TermDefinition
ProjectionAn expected-points estimate for one player. The optimizer's fuel.
Value (pts/$1k)Projection ÷ (salary ÷ 1,000) — the standard efficiency unit.
2x ruleCash heuristic: a player should project ≈ 2× his salary in thousands; a lineup ≈ 2× cap-in-thousands.
CeilingA high-percentile outcome (P95 in this site's simulator).
FloorA low-percentile outcome (P5) — what cash builds maximize.
MedianThe 50th-percentile outcome; the honest reading of a projection.
OwnershipShare of the field rostering a player. Zero-sum leverage in GPPs.
OptimalThe highest-total-projection legal lineup under given inputs. A math claim, not a forecast.
KnapsackThe constraint problem every optimizer solves: maximize value under slots + budget.
Late swapEditing a lineup slot after other games have started (offered by DraftKings NFL).

Slang you'll meet in threads

  • Slate — the set of games available in a contest (main slate, single-game, late slate).
  • Lock / lock window — the deadline after which lineups freeze; also the verb for forcing a player into optimizer lineups.
  • Fade — to deliberately avoid a popular player.
  • Ship — to win a GPP ('shipped the tournament').
  • Sweat — watching games with money on the line.
  • Dead money — entries with no realistic path to cashing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does '2x value' mean exactly?
Points equal to twice salary in thousands: a $6,000 player 'returns 2x' by scoring 12 points. It's the cash-game heuristic break-even, encoded in our value calculator with an editable multiplier — because the real bar moves with slate and contest.
What's the difference between floor and ceiling?
Floor is a bad-but-realistic outcome (we use the 5th percentile), ceiling a great one (95th). A projection sits between them — usually near the middle. The Range of Outcomes tool computes both for any lineup.
Why is ownership a 'thing'?
Because GPP prizes split among entrants with identical lineups. Rostering what everyone rosters duplicates the field's result; rostering a low-owned player who hits leapfrogs it. Ownership is the second game being played on top of football.
What is a 'late swap'?
DraftKings NFL contests let you edit not-yet-started slots after earlier games are live — injury insurance and in-game leverage at once. Our optimizer's output helps you pre-plan the swap candidates.
Is 'chalk' bad?
No — chalk is just consensus. Correctly-rostered chalk wins cash games constantly. It's only a 'problem' in GPPs where duplicating the field caps your upside.
